There are a number of options for travelling to Orkney and a good public transport system on the Islands.

ORKNEY MAP

Orkney Ferries - The easiest way to travel to Wheems Farm is to take Pentland Ferries' Pentalina passenger / car ferry from Gills Bay on Mainland Scotland to St Margaret's Hope, South Ronaldsay. For information and booking visit: www.pentlandferries.co.uk (tel. 01856 831 226 / 01955 611 773).

There are three other ferry services from mainland Scotland to the Orkney Islands. These include;

  1. Passenger ferry (summertime only) from John O'Groats, Scotland, to Burwick, South Ronaldsay. For information and booking visit www.jogferry.co.uk (tel. 01955 611 353 / 611 342).
  2. Ferry from Aberdeen to the Orkney Islands' capital, Kirkwall - a 1/2 hour drive from Wheems Farm.

Orkney Flights - There are flights to Orkney from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Shetland. Kirkwall Airport is 3 miles east of Kirkwall and 1/2 an hour drive from Wheems Farm. From Orkney Airport - If you are travelling by car there are two routes you could take, one slightly more scenic than the other (click link for Google Map). If travelling by bus there are buses to and from the airport to Kirkwall and regular buses from Kirkwall to St Margarets Hope please see Orkney Service Directory.

Travelling to Wheems Once on Orkney Mainland
Str Margaret's Hope

From St Margaret's Hope (click link for Google Map), come up the hill and turn right onto the A961, towards Burwick. Turn immediately left at the 1st World War memorial, marked Eastside. Travel along for 1 1/2 miles, passing old church hall on left. Reach cross roads, keep going straight heading towards the sea. After arriving from John O'Groats to Burwick, South Ronaldsay (click link for Google Map) as a foot passenger, come along the A961 towards Kirkwall. At 1st World War memorial, marked Eastside, turn right, immediately before the turning for St Margaret's Hope. Follow instructions above.


From Stromness and Kirkwall (click link for Google Map), take the A961 towards South Ronaldsay. Immediately after the turning for St Margaret's Hope and after 1st World War memorial, marked Eastside, turn left. Follow instructions above.
